Garbage pickup in the Town of North Hempstead is the most confusing on Long Island. There’s no single Town sanitation crew. Instead, collection is split between Town garbage districts that hire private carters, 31 incorporated villages with their own arrangements, and hamlets that contract their own carters. Two houses on the same side of Northern Boulevard can have different carters, different bulk days and different limits.
This guide explains how to find out who collects your garbage, what the bulk rules look like in Manhasset, Port Washington, Roslyn and Great Neck, and how to handle appliances, renovation debris, electronics and hazardous waste. Everything comes from official Town and village pages, linked so you can check the latest version.
Last reviewed: October 2026. Carter contracts change, so confirm with the Town’s Solid Waste Management office at 311 (516-869-6311) or your village hall.
Step 1: Find out who collects your garbage
The Town’s Department of Solid Waste Management runs refuse and recycling for five Town garbage districts through contracts with private carters. Everyone else, the 31 villages and several hamlets, arranges collection separately. The Town keeps a table of who serves each area on its Garbage Districts and Collection Schedules page, and posts each district’s current mailer on the Carter Mailers page.
Town garbage districts (2026 carters)
- Manhasset: Jamaica Ash
- Albertson, Searingtown and Herricks: Jamaica Ash
- New Hyde Park, Garden City Park and Floral Park Center: Jamaica Ash
- Great Neck (University Gardens and Harbor Hills): Meadow Carting
- New Cassel and Westbury area: Meadow Carting
Other areas
- Unincorporated Port Washington, and Roslyn, Roslyn Heights, Greenvale, Glenwood Landing, Carle Place and East Williston, are listed outside the Town contract, with Meadow Carting as the carter.
- The Village of Roslyn lists National Waste Services. Great Neck Plaza lists Jamaica Ash.
- Villages including Great Neck, Mineola, Williston Park, East Hills, New Hyde Park, Westbury and Floral Park collect with their own employees.
- Many other villages, including Flower Hill, Plandome, Munsey Park, Manorhaven, Kings Point and Great Neck Estates, contract with Meadow Carting.
Meadow Carting bought DeJana Industries in 2024, so older listings that still show DeJana now generally mean Meadow. When in doubt, call 311.
We serve all of North Hempstead. See our pages for Manhasset, Port Washington and Roslyn.
Step 2: The Town-wide bulk rule
From the Town’s Residential vs. Commercial Waste page:
- Bulky household items like couches and mattresses are residential waste.
- Bulk items and homeowner cleanouts go out on the last collection day of the week.
- If an item is too large to handle, call your area’s contracted carter first.
Step 3: Bulk limits by area
Limits in North Hempstead are tight. In most areas, expect one bulk item per week.
Great Neck district (Meadow Carting)
According to the 2026 mailer, furniture, mattresses, rugs and appliances are accepted, one bulk item per week on your last regular pickup day. Two or more items carry an extra charge (Meadow: 516-338-0121). Items must be out by 7 a.m. Cleanout rubbish is limited to two 32-gallon cans, 50 pounds each, on your regular garbage day, and contractor materials aren’t collected.
Jamaica Ash districts
The 2026 New Hyde Park area mailer allows only one bulk item at the curb, picked up on Friday for Monday-Wednesday-Friday routes and Saturday for Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday routes, with extra charges for more. The Albertson, Searingtown and Herricks mailer classifies cleanouts, moves and large accumulations as contractor material that residents must hire a service to remove. Manhasset is also served by Jamaica Ash. Call 516-333-2211 to confirm Manhasset’s bulk details.
Villages around Manhasset, Port Washington and Roslyn
- Plandome: bulk on your last pickup day of the week, up to two large items, with special Saturday pickups available through Meadow for more. Source: Village of Plandome.
- Manorhaven (Port Washington): schedule bulk with Meadow Carting at 516-338-0121. Toilets, sinks, cabinets, lumber, tires, paint and construction material aren’t allowed at the curb. Source: Village of Manorhaven.
- Roslyn Harbor: one bulk item on Friday or Saturday depending on your route. Rugs must be cut to 4 feet, under 50 pounds, maximum three rolls. Repeat violations can bring fines. Source: Village of Roslyn Harbor.
- Great Neck Estates: one appliance per week, carpet cut to 4 feet and rolled. Source: Village of Great Neck Estates.
With one item a week, clearing a basement or a house through curbside pickup would take months. That’s the most common reason North Shore homeowners call us. See house cleanouts, estate cleanouts and furniture removal.

Step 4: Renovation and contractor debris
North Hempstead is strict here. The Town says all commercial waste, without exception, must be removed by the contractor. That includes kitchen and bathroom renovations, flooring, roofing, and plumbing and electrical work. Contractors are expected to include disposal in their price, and using an unlicensed contractor can lead to fines for both the contractor and the homeowner. Small do-it-yourself amounts count as residential, but larger amounts need a dumpster or a private removal service.
The 2026 carter mailers also list items never accepted at the curb, including bricks, concrete, asphalt, stone, asbestos, pipes, chain-link fence, toilets, propane tanks and liquid paint. See construction debris removal and our dumpster alternative.
Step 5: Appliances and mattresses
- Appliances are bulk items, and refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed before pickup.
- Mattresses and box springs are bulk items under the same one-item limits.
- The Town also suggests asking the store to haul away the old appliance or mattress when the new one is delivered.
See appliance removal and mattress removal.
Step 6: The Sunday Resident Drop-Off
If you’d rather haul it yourself, the Town runs a fee-based Sunday Resident Drop-Off, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed holidays.
- Accepted: general refuse, furniture, do-it-yourself residential construction debris and yard waste.
- Fees by vehicle: car $11, SUV $15, pickup $31, van $45. Credit or debit only.
- You need a driver’s license with a North Hempstead address. No commercial vehicles or trailers, and rentals no larger than a van.
- No household hazardous waste, electronics, medications or smoke detectors.
Step 7: Yard waste
Yard waste rules come from your carter. In the Great Neck district, the 2026 mailer lists Wednesday collection in paper bags or a labeled bin, with branches under 2 inches thick bundled no larger than 4 by 2 feet and 50 pounds. Jamaica Ash districts collect yard waste from early April to mid-December on Wednesday or Thursday depending on your route. Landscapers are required to haul away their own clippings.
Step 8: Electronics
New York State bans covered electronics from the trash and the curb. North Hempstead accepts e-waste only at its E-waste and S.T.O.P. events, not at the Sunday drop-off. E-waste events are held at 802 West Shore Road in Port Washington, 8 a.m. to noon, with the remaining 2026 dates on Sunday, November 15 and Saturday, December 5. Check the Upcoming Events page before you go.
- Accepted: computers and tablets, TVs, monitors and accessories, printers under 100 pounds, DVD and DVR players, game consoles, cable boxes and small electronics.
- Not accepted: appliances including microwaves, phones, cameras and radios.

Step 9: S.T.O.P. hazardous waste days
The Town’s free S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) days take household hazardous waste from residents. Drivers stay in the car while staff unload. In 2026 they were held at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington and at Westbury High School. All 2026 dates have passed, so watch the events page for next year. Source: Special Programs.
- Accepted: rechargeable, lithium, button and car batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, air conditioner refrigerants, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, bleach and drain cleaners, mercury products, oil-based paint and thinners, pool chemicals, solvents and unused flammable liquids. Free document shredding is offered too.
- Not accepted: explosives, ammunition, fireworks, radioactive or commercial waste, medications, smoke detectors and latex paint. Let latex paint dry out, then put it in the trash and recycle the can.
- Medications: the Town’s Shed the Meds event takes them, with one more date on Sunday, October 18, 2026, 8 a.m. to noon at 802 West Shore Road. Nassau County police precincts accept medications around the clock.
When to call a crew instead
One bulk item a week works for an occasional chair. It doesn’t work for a cleanout, a renovation, a move or an estate. North Hempstead’s own rules point residents to private removal for anything bigger.
Junk Done Right is a licensed and insured Long Island crew that works across the North Shore, from Manhasset and Port Washington to Roslyn, Great Neck and the surrounding villages.
